In Tuscany, the helicopter rescue service has been active for twenty years, since July 1999. It is organized on three operational bases: Pegaso 1 helicopter, based in the Santa Maria Annunziata hospital (Ponte a Niccheri), in the central Tuscan ASL (Florence), with operational expertise prevalent in the central Tuscany area; Pegaso 2, based in the Misericordia hospital of the South East Tuscany Local Health Authority (Grosseto), with operational competence prevalent in the southern Tuscany area and islands of the archipelago; Pegaso 3, based at Cinquale airport, Asl Toscana northwest (Massa Carrara), with operational competence prevalent in the northern Tuscany area and islands of the archipelago
